Economics
We study economics because of the critical approach to various models and methods of enquiry, which allow us to develop ad harness key analytical and evaluative skills. Economics seeks to explain what drives human behaviour, decisions and reactions when faced with difficulties or successes; it is a discipline which combines politics, sociology, psychology and history. We provide students with a broad knowledge of developments in the UK economy and government policies over the past fifteen years, and reference important historical events in order to deepen students’ understanding, and ask them to think differently.
Student are expected acquire competence in quantitative skills that are relevant to the subject content, and be familiar with the various types of statistical and other data which are commonly used by economists. Students will be able to make both calculations, interpretation, and judgments from data. Students should understand the role of evidence in economic decision making but should appreciate the importance of value judgements.
It is expected that students will acquire a strong knowledge of trends and developments in the economy which have taken place over the past fifteen years and also have an awareness of earlier events where this helps to give recent developments a longer-term perspective.
