HASN production of Hairspray The Musical 2022 returns after three-year hiatus

HASN production of Hairspray The Musical 2022 returns after three-year hiatus

The 6th, 7th and 8th July 2022 marked the return of the annual HASN Musical, this year performing Hairspray The Musical, after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, the musical follows the story of dance-loving Tracy Turnblad. Hairspray is a show about body positive, racial integration and social harmony that alongside provides an opportunity for reflection, is also lively, energetic and funny and contained catchy songs.

The Hairspray journey started with an incredibly competitive audition process back in March. Ever since then, we have had nine weeks of five-afternoons-a week rehearsals along with three Saturday rehearsals, demonstrating the dedication of the 70-piece cast and 18-piece live band, which nobody could question.

The eagerness of the Year 7s to be involved has been heart-warming and the passion from our Sixth Formers and Year 11s to be involved again after all this time is a testament to their dedication to the Performing Arts. The Year 11s and 13s have dealt with pressures of exams and revision while preparing for the show and have also been great leaders to the younger generation.

Principal Rob Hitch commented: "The Musical was a resounding success. The performances were of a quality I have never before seen in any school production, more than anything though it was inspiring to see so many students show the courage to perform for the very first time. We can't wait for the next one!"

There are a few students in their final musical. Our Year 8 Carmen, playing one of The Dynamites, and Carolina in Year 10 as Prudy Pingleton and Matron, will be leaving HASN. Nicole, Kydavia, Laila, Louise and Bruna have all been stalwarts on stage for many years with us and have all developed into fine young performers. Geranda, Artemis and Joseph from the band have been incredibly dedicated musicians in their time at HASN. We will them all the very best with their future endeavours.

Congratulations once again to all involved and we look forward to the return of the

Musical in 2023.
