KS3 Mandarin Study Day at British Film Institute
On 19th January 2023, 30 Year 8 and 9 pupils went to the British Film Institute in Southbank to study a film in Chinese language to explore the themes of family and modern Chinese culture.
In the morning, students were provided the opportunity to explore contemporary culture in China in depth through textual analysis of key scenes in selected Chinese feature and short films, such as Not One Less (2000) directed by Zhang Yimou and Please Vote for Me (Weijun Chen, 2007). Students developed an understanding of Chinese traditions as well as China today, via the study of topics such as family, travel and technology presented by UCL.
In the afternoon, students watched a full-length screening of a recent Chinese film - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. They enjoyed the film very much and had a deeper understanding of Chinese family and Martial Arts.
