More About English
Dear Parent/Guardian
I am delighted to inform you that the English Department is launching a new and exciting initiative this summer in an effort to further promote and encourage our students to read for pleasure.
As you might know, we already have the AR system set up and our year 7 and 8 students can continue to read and do their quizzes over the break! Additionally, we have created a diverse summer reading list to give each student the opportunity to find a book where they can discover their own voice or experiences that they can identify with.
We hope that our students at both Key Stage 3 and 4 will be encouraged to read at least 3 of the books recommended over the summer and be prepared to share their experiences with us via SMH as they will be given opportunities to communicate what they are reading with their English teachers. Reading is not just an opportunity for escapism but also a means through which we connect with experiences with which we can identify. It is our hope that this eclectic summer collection of diverse voices will provide an opportunity for each child to be inspired, empowered and connect with stories that are an expression of the way they see themselves.
Please support your child by encouraging him/her to read at least 3 books from the list and write at least one review which they can share with their English teacher in September. We are also particularly excited to share our own personal reading lists with you and our students. We hope that you might find something on there to read yourself; it can be very powerful when children see their parents model reading.
We want to thank you for your support with this initiative as we endeavor to continue to promote a love of reading so that ultimately our students become global citizens and ambassadors - empowered and capable of adapting to and embracing the challenges of an ever-changing world.
